Embroidered Scarf
This hand-embroidered scarf is the only wearable piece in The Met x Bolé Road Textiles collection—a contemporary interpretation of a richly adorned woman’s wrapper from Niger in the Museum’s holdings. The original textile, created in the 20th century by the Wodaabe-Fulani peoples, stood out for its vivid embroidery and symbolic importance, as it was worn during ceremonial gatherings and celebrations.
For this piece, the traditional has been reimagined through the lens of modern craftsmanship. The scarf was handwoven in Ethiopia and embroidered in Brooklyn in collaboration with textile artist Krystle Collins, whose work celebrates African American cultural expression. Her embroidery brings a fresh narrative to the cloth, echoing the legacy of the original while making space for new stories to unfold.
Soft, intricate, and deeply considered, this scarf is both an adornment and homage—a bridge between heritage and the present moment.
